It’s Fall, and that means it’s time for one of the most unique and fun beer festivals of the year: Brewing Up A Cure!

Many, many professional brewers cut their teeth in their garages, basements, and kitchens, experimenting and cultivating beers on small 5-gallon homebrew systems. Their love affair with this addictive hobby naturally progressed into a very cool career, thus giving them the ability to make beer for the masses on a much larger scale. But, no matter how far they go and how popular their beers become, no brewer ever forgets his or her homebrewing roots.

Homebrewing isn’t just a hobby here in Pittsburgh. There are several clubs dedicated to producing the highest-quality, drinkable craft beer and sharing it with their friends, families, and other craft beer enthusiasts. Some have aspirations to go pro, others brew simply because they love to do so. And while they aren’t licensed to sell, homebrewers’ presence can be felt at craft beer event and festivals year-round in Pittsburgh, showcasing their abilities and proving that great beer can come from anywhere as long as passion for creation is present.

Three Rivers Underground Brewers, also known as T.R.U.B., is a Pittsburgh-based homebrewing club that is dedicated to promoting and enjoying the joy of homebrewing. While their club may be small in size, they are incredibly active in the homebrewing community. You’ve most likely crossed paths with members of T.R.U.B. at a number of craft beer festivals throughout Pittsburgh.

BUAC LogoT.R.U.B. also hosts the annual Brewing Up A Cure Festival, a beer event unlike any other in our region. Entering its 11th year, Brewing Up A Cure is set to unfold on Saturday, October 21st at the PPG Wintergarden in Downtown Pittsburgh. This event is your opportunity to experience beers not available anywhere else in the world, crafted in small batches by Pittsburgh homebrewing experts.

Brewing Up A Cure is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis research. It allows the members of T.R.U.B. to promote homebrewing to the community, as well as support a cause that is very close to the club’s hearts. T.R.U.B. club members Shane Terrick, as well as Robert and Danielle Domiano, each have children who were born with Cystic Fibrosis.

The annual event has grown from just a small group of homebrewers to one of Pittsburgh’s signature beer events. Brewing Up A Cure will feature well over 75 different homebrewed beers made by club members, as well as beer from craft breweries across the Pittsburgh region. Some professional brewers will be returning to their roots for the event, knocking the dust off their homebrew equipment and creating a special batch exclusively for Brewing Up A Cure. There will also be great food from local eateries, live music, and items up for auction.

Past Brewing Up A Cure events have seen upwards of 650 attendees and the donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has grown to nearly $250,000! Your attendance at this event won’t just grant you the ability to sample unique beer for an evening…it’ll allow you to donate to a great cause, too.

The craft beer landscape in Pittsburgh is not just comprised of great people making and enjoying great beer. It’s also comprised of people never wavering when it comes to supporting a worthy cause. We live in pretty abundant times when so many incredible beers are at our disposal. When an event comes together that allows us to celebrate that while raising money to find a cure for a terrible disease, it makes each pint taste that much sweeter.
